Professor Achim I. Czerny is the Vice President of the International Transportation Economics Association (ITEA), a member of the Executive Committee of the European Aviation Conference Institute (EACI), Executive Committee member of the Air Transportation Research Association (ATRS), and Chairman of the German Aviation Research Society (GARS). He is also in the editorial boards of Economics of Transportation, Italian Economic Journal, Journal of Shipping and Trade, Research in Transportation Economics, Journal of the Air Transport Research Society.

During this webinar, he will deliver an insightful presentation titled: “Greening transport: is carbon pricing sufficient?”

In transport, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced in many ways. One is by improving fuel efficiency by, for instance, modernizing the fleet. This is a theoretical study analyzing the greening incentives created by carbon taxes. The model involves a two-stage game. In the first stage, firms invest in green technology. In the second stage, they compete in prices à la Bertrand. He finds with his colleagues that green taxes are less effective than one might expect in incentivizing the environmental transition. This is because firms have incentives to strategically underinvest in green technology in the first stage in an attempt to soften competition in the second, pricing stage. They further show that strategic effects can be more relevant for low-cost competitors compared their high-cost rivals and that high-cost rivals may extend their output as a result of the low-cost rival’s strategic reduction in investments.

Paco Viry, a PhD candidate at the Institute for Sustainable Aviation, presented his research at the TSAS conference in Toulouse. His study, based on 30 years of air operations in North America and 56 different aircraft models, identifies three key factors in aircraft allocation to routes:
– Route length,
– Passenger flow intensity,
– Competition between models within the fleet.

Why does it matter?

Aircraft renewal does not follow a simple logic: an A380 can indirectly compete with a B737-800 through a complex chain of substitutions. Yet, allocation choices have a major impact as fuel consumption per passenger-kilometer can vary significantly, even between aircraft of the same generation. This research, which will contribute to the AeroMAPS platform, aims to better quantify fleet renewal and allocation dynamics to support decision-making for airlines, manufacturers, and regulators.

After a graduation in mechanical engineering in aeronautics (ISAE-ENSICA) and a PhD in fluid mechanics and plasma at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of Toulouse (IMFT, 2018), Nicolas Monrolin pursued its carrier as a teacher-researcher in the French civil aviation school (ENAC). His recent research focuses on air transport decarbonization and environmental sustainability. During his presentation, he outlined various potential energy production pathways to meet the aviation sector’s needs and discussed the necessary adaptations in aircraft design to optimize energy efficiency based on mission profiles.

His presentation was discussed by Florian Simatos, full Professor in probability, statistics, and in sustainable aviation at ISAE-SUPAERO, who shared his insights and relayed questions from the large audience attending this 4th webinar hosted by our Institute.
