The request for funding of the Institute of Sustainable Aviation has received the full attention of the Occitania region. Convinced of the quality of the ISA project, the Occitanie region has granted funding of €1,200,000 from 2022 to 2027 as part of the regional Green Aircraft plan. 

This funding is a first basis on which research programs are being launched. A target of 10 young researchers and 30 graduate students will benefit from this grant.

The Erasmus-Decartes Conference is an initiative, founded in 2002, by the Embassies of France and the Kingdom of the Netherlands to exchange skills and ideas and to strengthen bilateral collaboration between France and the Netherlands in order to find solutions to global challenges.

The theme of the twentieth edition was sustainable aviation, with a particular focus on promoting the use of hydrogen in aviation, addressing open issues related to technology, policy and jurisdiction.

ISA will participate in the TU Delft-France initiative that has successfully created a special fund dedicated to collaborative research projects.

The power of artifacts to reflect our culture and influence us as individuals, as highlighted by Material culture (Woodward, 2007), shows the importance of design in the ecological transition, a major issue in our society. Although sustainability cannot be based on technological solutions (Bremer et al., 2022), it should be a central concern of human-computer interactive systems design (Blevis, 2007).

In Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Systems Engineering (SE), current efforts for a more sustainable world focus on the energy efficiency of a system, optimising its lifecycle and encouraging users to save energy. Some voices in the HCI community recognise that the current approach, which focuses on the material impact of artefacts, is reductive and insufficient in the face of this systemic problem (Knowles et al., 2018). 

It misses the opportunity to facilitate a necessary change in societal practices. In fact, Sustainable HCI projects attempt to respond to problems that have not been clearly formulated (Rivière, 2021), and the community struggles to develop tools and methods for this purpose., Systemic design, an emerging practice resulting from the combination of design and systems thinking, has developed methods for addressing complex problems. 

This paper proposes to draw inspiration from these methods to apprehend the systemic dimension of the ecological transition in the design of interactive systems, particularly in the formulation of the problem and the objectives.

In 2021, we released CAST, an open-access academic tool from ISAE-SUPAERO to model transition scenarios for the airline industry. Today, CAST is evolving into AeroMAPS.

AeroMAPS features many improvements over CAST, including market/fleet partitioning, fleet renewal models, a detailed description of several alternative fuels and energy resource consumption assessments. What’s more, the code is now open-source via this link: https://github.com/AeroMAPS/AeroMAPS

Ultimately, AeroMAPS is intended to model, with several levels of fidelity, the different components of air transport, their associated impacts and their multiple interactions. Multiple disciplinary fields (engineering, environment, economics, regulation, sociology…) will be integrated into the project, and work has already begun on modeling transition costs (alternative fuels, new aircraft) and regulatory tools (EU-ETS, CORSIA). This work is a key component of the research carried out by the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA). The aim is to make AeroMAPS a sectoral IAM (Integrated Assessment Model) for aviation, enabling a holistic assessment of aviation transition scenarios.
