The workshop was opened by Pierre Tabary, Head of the Aeronautical Department at Météo-France (Directorate of Meteorological Services), and Laurent Joly, Director of ISA. Throughout the day, participants attended presentations by six experts from academia, public institutions, and industry, offering complementary perspectives on the challenges posed by weather and climate change for the aviation sector.

Our sincere thanks go to Frédéric Cherbonnier (TSE), François-Xavier Chopin (DGAC), Pierre Crispel (Météo-France), Cyril Fabre (Airbus), Suzanne Salles (IRT – ISAE -SUPAERO – ISA), Pierre Tabary (Météo-France) for their insightful contributions on the impacts of weather and climate change across the entire aviation value chain, from aircraft design and airport infrastructure management to investment decisions and climate adaptation strategies.

The workshop once again highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary research in addressing these complex challenges. On December 12, the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) brought together researchers and industry representatives at ISAE-SUPAERO to discuss the future of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Welcomed by Marie-Hélène Baroux, Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO, the speakers — Saï Bravo-Melgarejo (CEA I-Tésé), Bertrand Guichard (IFPEN), Gaulthier Blangez (Atoba Enregy), Laurent Grosclaude (ISA – Université Toulouse Capitole), Antoine Salgas (ISA – ISAE-SUPAERO), Guillaume Bidan (Safran) — shared their analyses of the key challenges related to SAF.
Their contributions addressed airline economic models, major production pathways and their technological maturity, as well as the structuring role of aggregators in market emergence. They also shed light on potential SAF deployment trajectories by examining regulatory frameworks, supply scenarios, technical constraints related to engine use, and modeling tools mapping SAF availability.

The Institute for Sustainable Aviation was delighted to host its 3rd workshop on « Trajectories for the Future of Aviation » on Monday, July 1st, at CERFACS in Toulouse. The presentations, which covered numerous research areas, highlighted the interactions and impacts across disciplinary fields, thereby fostering a holistic approach to the transition of the aviation sector.

The presentations addressed:

• A comprehensive study on the impact of taxation as a mechanism to encourage the decarbonization of aviation,
• An in-depth analysis of the welfare effect of a carbon tax in the long distance passenger market,
• An examination of the entire lifecycle of aircraft and the potential for improving recyclability within the aviation industry,
• An exploration of innovative design approaches that incorporate uncertainties to enhance aircraft efficiency,
• Predictive and management models for the renewal of aircraft fleets to meet future needs,
• A holistic approach to the life cycle assessment of air transport systems.

The Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) held its second workshop on trajectories for the future of aviation on Friday, December 15.

Welcomed at the Manufacture des Tabacs by Hugues Kenfack, President of Toulouse Capitole University, and Stéphane Mouton, Professor of Law (UTC) and member of the ISA’s CODIR, more than 75 students, researchers, teachers and industry executives came to explore a wide range of disciplines (economics, law, history, meteorology, physical and computer sciences) to broaden their vision of the future of aviation.

The speakers – Louis Devoyon, Paula Navarro, Matthieu Plu, François Gallard, Thierry Poinsot and Elise Roy de Belleplaine – addressed  issues such as the cross-influences between air transport and society, industrial organisation, decision-making tools for energy transition, limiting persistent condensation trails, the role of hydrogen and combustion safety in the energy mix, and the law on new technologies to meet the challenges of decarbonising aviation.

To close the workshop, Laurent Joly, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Aviation,  summarized the work presented and the discussions it generated.

More than 50 researchers, teachers and representatives of the aviation industry took part in the bi-annual workshop organized by the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) on Friday 7th July on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus.

The speakers, experts in a wide range of disciplines (law, economics, technology, etc.), have been looking at the future of aviation from all angles.
