SAF Futures: Innovations, Challenges and Social Dimensions
On Friday, December 12, the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) held its 6ᵗʰ workshop on the ISAE-SUPAERO campus, dedicated to the topic: “SAF Futures: Innovations, Challenges and Social Dimensions.”
On December 12, the Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) brought together researchers and industry representatives at ISAE-SUPAERO to discuss the future of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
Welcomed by Marie-Hélène Baroux, Director General of ISAE-SUPAERO, the speakers — Saï Bravo-Melgarejo (CEA I-Tésé), Bertrand Guichard (IFPEN), Gaulthier Blangez (Atoba Enregy), Laurent Grosclaude (ISA – Université Toulouse Capitole), Antoine Salgas (ISA – ISAE-SUPAERO), Guillaume Bidan (Safran) — shared their analyses of the key challenges related to SAF.
Their contributions addressed airline economic models, major production pathways and their technological maturity, as well as the structuring role of aggregators in market emergence. They also shed light on potential SAF deployment trajectories by examining regulatory frameworks, supply scenarios, technical constraints related to engine use, and modeling tools mapping SAF availability.
Many thanks to all speakers, to Laurent Joly and Nicolas Gourdain, who moderated the discussions, and to the audience, whose contributions fostered close dialogue between economics, engineering, regulation, and industry in support of the transition toward sustainable aviation.
Below are the presentations:
Do ailines adopt sustainable aviation fuels under modal competition – Sai Bravo-Melgarejo
How to address the financial risk in the SAF market – Gaulthier Blangez
The Regulatory Framework for Sustainable Aviation Fuels – Laurent Grosclaude
Adressing the complexity of the future SAF landscape – Guillaume Bidan
