Dr. Khan Doyme leads the development of the Airline Behaviour Model. His research focuses on game-theoretic approaches to understand competition effects in the aviation industry. This approach is combined with passenger demand and choice modelling to obtain a full picture of the airline industry. Having first developed the Airline Behaviour Model as part of the ACCLAIM (Airport Capacity Consequences Leveraging Aviation Integrated Modelling) project, he has since updated and extended its functionality for the EPSRC funded TOZCA (Towards Zero Carbon Aviation) and ATI funded LH2GT projects.

During her presentation, “Assessing the Impact of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) on Airline Supply: Evidence from Synthetic Control Methods”, Dr. Tiziana D’Alfonso shared the findings of her award-winning publication* (Best Paper at the ATRS 2021 Conference).

Her research highlighted the impact of the EU ETS on airlines’ business models, flight frequency and route selection.

Dr. Chantal Roucolle, researcher and lecturer at ENAC, then led a lively discussion on the challenges of carbon taxes, particularly their effects on airfare pricing and airline strategies.

The Institute for Sustainable Aviation (ISA) was delighted to host Dr Gökçin Çınar on Tuesday, October 21, as part of its bi-monthly webinar series.

Dr Gökçin Çınar is an Associate Professor at the University of Michigan, where she leads the Integrated Design of Efficient Aerospace Systems (IDEAS) laboratory.

Her engaging talk, entitled “Design and Optimization of Systems in Electrified Aviation: Models, Methods, and Emerging Perspectives,” shed light on the forthcoming advances in aircraft electrification. Dr Gökçin Çınar shared insights from her research on advanced design concepts and discussed the challenges and opportunities linked to digital transformation and the development of sustainable propulsion systems.

Following the presentation, Dr Maurice Hoogreef, Associate Professor at Delft University of Technology’s Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, joined Dr Y for an in-depth discussion on the methodologies used, upcoming research directions, battery recycling, and the evolving approaches to teaching these complex topics.

Dr Rhea Liem’s insightful talk, “Designing Next-Generation Aircraft and Operations for Sustainable Aviation: From Data and Models to Decisions” shed light on the importance of enhancing aircraft performance and fuel consumption models through the integration of real-world data.

By combining physics-based modeling, optimization techniques, and machine learning, she presented a range of innovative approaches, from data-enhanced mission analysis to trajectory and shape optimization, aimed at reducing fuel burn and noise.

The discussion with her discussant, Junzi Sun, Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, offered valuable perspectives on leveraging operational data in dynamic environments and emphasized how AI can bridge aircraft design and operations to support a more systemic approach to sustainability.

The Institute for Sustainable Aviation was delighted to welcome Alain Trannoy, a research professor at EHESS and a member of the Aix-Marseille School of Economics for its sixth webinar on sustainable aviation. His main research fields are economic inequality and equality of opportunity, taxation, financing higher education, and housing economics. He has published papers in the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, The Journal of Economic Literature, the Journal of Economic Theory, the Journal of Public Economics, the Journal of Labor Economics, the Journal of European Economic Association, the Rand Journal of Economics, European Economic Review, American Economic Journal Public Policy etc. He belonged to the Council of Economic Advisors of the French Prime Minister from 2012 to 2016.

His presentation was introduced by Marc Ivaldi, Professor of Economics at the Toulouse School of Economics (TSE).

Jean-Marie Tarascon is a world-renowned researcher, Professor at the Collège de France, holder of the prestigious “Solid-State Chemistry – Energy” chair. 

His cutting-edge research focuses on battery materials and electrolytes, novel reactivity concepts, next-generation chemistries beyond lithium, and advanced sensing technologies. With over 700 scientific papers, ~100 patents, and numerous awards—including the 2020 Balzan Prize and the 2022 CNRS Gold Medal—Professor Tarascon is one of the foremost leaders in his field.

His captivating lecture on “Batteries: Indispensable but Perfectible Allies for Tomorrow’s World” shed light on the incremental advancements expected in chemistry and engineering, while broadening perspectives on the future of the industrial and recycling environment for batteries.

Following the presentation, Laurent Joly, Director of ISA, highlighted the challenges of aeronautical applications and asked Professor Tarascon for his thoughts on the technological scenarios for using electrochemical energy storage in aircraft propulsion electrification.

After a graduation in mechanical engineering in aeronautics (ISAE-ENSICA) and a PhD in fluid mechanics and plasma at the Institute of Fluid Mechanics of Toulouse (IMFT, 2018), Nicolas Monrolin pursued its carrier as a teacher-researcher in the French civil aviation school (ENAC). His recent research focuses on air transport decarbonization and environmental sustainability. He studies more precisely the impact of new airplane architecture on the overall air transport system with a multidisciplinary analysis approach.explores the impact of new aircraft architectures on the broader air transport system using a multidisciplinary analysis approach.

During his presentation, he outlined various potential energy production pathways to meet the aviation sector’s needs and discussed the necessary adaptations in aircraft design to optimize energy efficiency based on mission profiles.

His presentation was discussed by Florian Simatos, full Professor in probability, statistics, and in sustainable aviation at ISAE-SUPAERO, who shared his insights and relayed questions from the large audience attending this 4th webinar hosted by our Institute.

A specialist in industrial organisation, air transport economics and urban economics, Professor Flores Fillol presented his work published in leading journals such as the European Economic Review and the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management. His lecture, entitled ‘The environmental challenge in aviation: can airport charges be part of the solution?’, explored the effect of different charges on airlines, ticket prices and CO2 and NOx emissions.

Bio : Joaquim R. R. A. Martins is the Pauline M. Sherman Collegiate Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he heads the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Laboratory (MDO Lab). He is a co-author of « Engineering Design Optimization », a textbook published by Cambridge University Press. Prof. Martins is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He did his undergraduate degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College, London, with a British Aerospace Award. He obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University, where he was awarded the Ballhaus prize for best thesis in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has received the Best Paper Award at AIAA Conferences five times. He has served as Associate Editor for the AIAA Journal, Optimization and Engineering, and Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. He is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of Aircraft.
