Understanding How Climate Risks Shape Air Travel Demand

A collaborative ISA research project led by TBS researchers, funded by Airbus, explores how environmental awareness and climate-related events influence passenger behaviour worldwide.

The Impact of Climate Risks on Air Travel Demand

The research project, led by Sylvain Bourjade and Debrah Meloso, professors of finance at TBS Education, in collaboration with Elena Asparouhova, Stena Faculty of Finance Chair at the University of Utah, focuses on a crucial economic issue: how climate risks and environmental awareness influence passenger behavior and demand for air transport.

Funded by Airbus, this collaborative study uses the tools of experimental economics to analyze the evolution of travelers’ preferences based on several factors: The perception of natural disasters and extreme weather events, the impact of environmental regulations on travel decisions, the growing influence of ecological concerns on consumer choices, the cultural and economic disparities that shape these trends worldwide.
The project lasts for 30 months, from December 1, 2024, to May 31, 2027.

The first results will be announced in 2026.
